Nearly 70% have denial overturned and claim approved

Hartford CT — The Connecticut Paid Leave Authority (CTPL) today reminded Connecticut residents that they can apply for reconsideration if their paid leave claim is denied. If a claim is not approved, residents may request a reconsideration by submitting a written request within 10 calendar days from the date of denial. Once CTPL has received the request, the agency fully reviews the claim and provides a response regarding the request for reconsideration in approximately 15 calendar days. Of those denied claimants who filed for reconsideration in the past, nearly 70% had the denial overturned and their claim approved.

“Our data shows that the number one reason people receive a denial of their claim is because they did not submit complete paperwork,” said CTPL CEO Andrea Barton Reeves. “Often this is because they have not received the completed forms from their employer or physician. The reconsideration process gives people the opportunity to correct or provide missing documentation without having to begin the claim process anew.”

Employees can submit their request for reconsideration by uploading a photo or scan of the reconsideration form to their case through the online web portal or returning the reconsideration form to the email address or fax number listed on the form. Forms are available on the CTPL website on the “For Claims” page. If after reconsideration (or instead of a reconsideration) the individual wishes to appeal the denial of their claim, they should contact the State of Connecticut Department of Labor. The Department of Labor is responsible for hearing appeals for denials of CT Paid Leave claims.

The reconsideration form is quick and easy to fill out. In addition to providing the contact information and claim number, claimants are asked to write the reason why they are requesting a reconsideration of the claim decision or benefit calculation, being specific about why the individual believes the decision was incorrect and what information supports their claim being approved. A reconsideration request does not guarantee the decision will change. The request will result in a review of any new information provided, along with information used to make the initial decision. The outcome of the review is provided within 15 days of receipt of the request.

To apply for paid leave online, workers will first need to create an account with CT.gov. This will provide the applicant with a single identity and will take approximately 10 minutes. The applicant can then submit their claim online. Claims may also be filed by phone by calling (877) 499–8606. Hours of operation for a live representative are 8 AM to 8 PM ET, Monday through Friday.
